Spoilers for story development in GreedFall
Butch:
Did the ritual, talked to Dunncas, went to "question the high king's loved ones" which I thought was rather rude, was told "Sorry Mario, your princess is in another castle" and now I'm off to find Cera.
Not into this twist. A reveal like that, late game, when you learn who killed someone, should make a player go
"No......WAY!" not "Who the hell is that?"
Yes, yes, they have mentioned a high king and how he's been away for a while, but the set up wasn't there. This was a "who the hell is that?" moment.
It's too bad. I was expecting a nice twist, a No....WAY twist, and this sort of thing would've been perfect. We could've learned someone was a villain without a whole mess of villain monologue like we so often get. They spent a lot of time and money to make a very well made cutscene just to make me go "Who the hell is that?"
Too bad.
Feminina:
Yeah, bringing a completely unknown high king into it at this point was a bit startling. That said...I dunno, see how you feel once you get through things. I feel like it actually kind of hangs together if you consider the high king as...well, I can't come up with a way to frame what I'm thinking without spoilers, so we'll talk later.
Butch:
OK....I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. For now.
What I can't figure out is how the game wants me to feel about Constantin. I'm not really liking Constantin. I don't trust him, I don't really respect him. That said, De Sardet is still all "Dearest cousin!" and shit. I never like that disconnect where I feel very differently from the character I'm playing. If the game wants me to dislike/distrust Constantin as a player, then they're forcing me into some level of disconnect with De Sardet. If they game wants me to really like him at this point, then that's bad writing because I don't.
I have no idea which they're going for, either. What was your take at this point?
Feminina:
I felt like I was totally not trusting him, and that de Sardet felt the same but was clinging to the hope that she was wrong. "Dearest cousin!" etc. felt kind of like a semi-desperate clinging to the faint chance that he's not a total horror.
That's how I made it work in my own head, anyway.
Butch:
Maybe....but man, you have to work to make it work. She sure seems keen on finding him, thinks he's a victim, etc. She hasn't expressed any emotion other than "MUST SAVE COUSIN!"
Feminina:
Wanting to believe the best of family, man. It makes fools of us all.
I mean, not me. I readily believe the worst of my family, even without provocation. But some people.
Butch:
You know, now that you mention it, family, specifically fathers, show up quite a bit here. Siora's parents? Dead mother, estranged father. Vasco? Sheesh. Kurt? Estranged father. Petrus is CALLED father and he has ISSUES. Aphra likely has something, but I forget. Constantin has ALL SORTS of daddy issues. De Sardet doesn't even know who her father IS!
Wonder if that was on purpose, or they just went to the trope well too many times.
Feminina:
Right! No wonder she's desperate to believe the best of the only family she has.
Or so we can choose to interpret it.
Butch:
I...guess....
Still. When you can't tell if it's themeage or lazy writing, does that, in and of itself, make it lazy writing?
Feminina:
One could certainly argue lazy writing in this case. I won't deny that.
