Niantic's Pokémon Go successor, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, is closing down. When it was in development, this game seemed to have unlimited potential. But it just didn't connect with players anywhere near as much as Pokémon Go did.
I wonder what went wrong here. It may have just been bad timing for the Harry Potter IP, as J.K. Rowling has become a controversial figure and the Fantastic Beasts movies haven't had the same box office success as the proper Potter films. Maybe Wizards Unite just wasn't fun enough.
This does make Pokémon Go look more like an anomaly and less like a blueprint for future games. I'm sure we'll see some other location-based AR hits, maybe even Niantic's new Pikmin game, but this isn't some emerging genre with room for multiple blockbusters.
