So, I read the comments at Mad Genius Club under the Freer piece I linked to. There I saw this:
"I saw a headline yesterday saying Australia has passed a law making it illegal to grow your own food. I was looking for something else on a deadline and didn't read the article. Dave, do you know anything about that?"
Now, without any research at all, I think a seconds thought would lead to the conclusion that Australia hasn't passed a law making it illegal to grow your own food. How on earth would such a law work and why would anybody propose it? In a world of competing claims, some are just obvious nonsense.
Another helpful reader of MGC had a link to offer from a tweet:
"VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA: Premier Dan Andrews is passing a bill that prohibits people from growing their own food. The Agriculture Legislation Amendment Bill 2022 has had its second reading in parliament. Biosecurity is stated as the reason for changes."
Gosh! Well if Apex World News says it is true, why I case it must be! How low effort is this "news" organisation? If you click on the link in the Twitter profile for their website, you get this:
"namecheap" says it all.
Now, a bit more digging does reveal that there is a bill in the Victorian parliament but not one that "prohibits people from growing their own food". There is some controversy over changes to laws regarding the regulation of people who inspect farms. Even on this more plausible issue there is some confusion.
"Misinformation about the Bill suggests the authorised officers will be able to undertake searches without a warrant, without landholder consent and without the requirement to present identification. The VFF believes this misrepresents and misinterprets the amendments set out in the Bill."
That's from the Victorian Farmer's Federation — not famed for being wild-eyed leftists and that's them debunking an even less lurid claim.
Yet here we are. I mean, we give a smidgen of credit to the commenter that they at least asked whether the claim was true rather than just repeating it as a fact but they really will treat absurdities as credible claims.
