The third set of adventures for The War Doctor Begins have now been released for Big Finish, with Jonathon Carley once more playing the Time War incarnation, directed by Louise Jameson.
While trying to escape inner turmoil, the Time Lord finds himself in a recurring nightmare of existence, joins forces with the Thals and, in The Keeper of Light, investigates a mystery alongside companion Layla Bridge (Emma Campbell-Jones).
The ensemble cast also includes Olivier Award-nominee Adèle Anderson (The Romanoffs) and Royal Shakespeare Company member Ken Bones (Doctor Who), with Hugh Ross (Outlander), David Warwick (Doctor Who), and Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks.
The Doctor is no more. In his place, a warrior, finally joining the Time War between the Daleks and Gallifrey. But how far will he go to end the conflict? What lines will he cross? How much of himself will he sacrifice? The War Doctor is beginning to find out who he is…
The Keeper of Light by Phil Mulryne
The Doctor and his faithful companion are on the trail of strange psionic signals… At a remote costal cottage, holidaymakers David and Dorothy think there's something strange about the lighthouse. But the Doctor can't shake the sense of an even bigger mystery to solve…
Temmosus by Rossa McPhillips
Fighting alongside the Time Lords against their common enemy, some Thals have realised that this collaboration is not between equals. When his new battleship is stolen, the War Doctor must convince his old allies that they are on the same side.
Rewind by Timothy X Atack
Lacuna is on the brink of destruction, attacked by a new breed of Dalek. But every day, it is pulled back from that brink, and everyone prepares to live through the end of their world once again. One strange man, alone in his castle, holds the key to Lacuna's ultimate salvation – or its annihilation.
Director Louise Jameson said: "The Keeper of Light is multi-layered and very beautifully written, while Temmosus is the most action-packed of the three stories. Rewind is terrific – it's Groundhog Day meets Catch-22 except everyone remembers everything!
"Jonathon goes from strength to strength. He really embodies the character and gives a beautiful performance. It was lovely having all the cast in the studio — you could feel the buzz. We're a real team with these War Doctor stories."
Jonathon Carley added: "I was already a fan of Louise's from her role in Doctor Who and from the very beginning of this project, we clicked. It's been a huge team effort and it's always a privilege to work with her.
"It means a lot to me to finally get to be in the studio with everyone as it generates such a great atmosphere. It's the icing on the cake.
"This is the third box set, so we're past the halfway point and things are hotting up. We've got things from the past, present, and future – but not necessarily in that order or in the way you're expecting."
Doctor Who: The War Doctor Begins: Battlegrounds is now available to own at £19.99 (collector's edition CD box set + download) or £16.99 (download only) from the Big Finish website.
