It is wise not to make an unguarded comment sometimes. Someone might hear you and have An Idea.
On Wednesday, a fellow ringer remarked that the handbell quarter peal just scored at my house was probably the furthest east that he had ever rung a quarter. Someone else mentioned Lowestoft, the most easterly town in the UK, and I remarked that despite a decent ring of 8, Lowestoft could no longer support a resident band. The conversation moved on to how one member of the group planned to be in Lowestoft on 21st June, the longest day of the year and planned a dip in the sea and other jollification at The First Light Festival. At which point I had The Idea. Why don't we ring at dawn as the sun rises over the most easterly point of the UK? It might remind the locals that they have bells and it could be fun.
Dawn on June 21st is quite early in the morning – around 4.44am. 444 changes sound quite manageable so rather than a quarter peal, who fancies 444 of something on an excellent Taylor ring of 8 (tenor 13cwt) in the most easterly tower in the British Isles? Ground floor ring and lots of parking. Not that there will be any traffic wardens around first thing.
Although perhaps we ought to leave it until later in the day to wake them all up, because we want the locals to be inspired to ring their bells again, not complain about the noise.
Dip in the sea optional, but could be invigorating. I'll fetch my towel.
