Well, we're not quite sure where May went but suddenly it's June already, which means our next monthly meeting is coming up - why not join us at 6pm upstairs at the Tam O'Shanter Pub on Tuesday 7th June?
Meanwhile the end of May also meant the latest of our 'curiosity rides', this time a jaunt down the Cairn Valley, following the course of the Cluden and then the Cairn, and back along the other side. The weather was fine, if a little chilly for the end of May, and we had a good turnout of 11 riders with some new faces and once more more e-bikes than purely cake-powered ones.
Electric assist or not, we took it fairly easy as we filtered through Lincluden and then headed west along the Irongray Road, which is probably one of the least hilly of the quiet rural roads (which may be why it's so popular among cyclists). We stopped off first at the Irongray Church to check out the graveyard and learn a bit more about local history.
Parking for 11 bikes ... or maybe two cars?
We then pressed on towards the Routin Brig where we stopped for lunch and explored a bit of the surrounding area, including the waterfall which was very low.
We had a choice after lunch - whether to cross the first bridge over the Cairn, or press on to the second. As people's legs (and batteries) were all feeling fresh, we took the latter option, making the ride a total of 18 miles all told
Testing the weight limits of the bridge ...
Once on the road back, the usual peeling off happened, as some folk were content to make their own way home. We recrossed the river at the Irongray Church and then our diminishing peloton made it back down towards the Hardthorn Road, the Maxwelltown Cycle Path and finally to our starting point by the Rowing Club.
Our next ride out is to Crocketford - the last Sunday of the month as usual. It's a slightly longer ride than this one, at 25 miles but as always, we'll be taking it easy. You can sign up here, or just turn up on the day. 11am at the Rowing Club either way.
