But first...

Yes, another of my cheap old junk shop scruffy books.
This time it is one for children, boys I think - see, no ponies on the cover!
No there aren't - but there are spacemen, planets, and rockets!
Let's have a look at the front and back covers, they are very nicely done and are quite colourful.
Yes, the Lion Annual, 1956.
Some stories in it are in normal text with the odd illustration, and some are in 'comic' form, using drawn panels in black and white, but some of these are in colour too. The rendition of colour is pretty bright - kids do like bright colours, the brighter, the better. And they do look so very stylish!
They remind me of the sort of things that Roy Lichtenstein would do - oh, I do love his work!
Come on, let's look at a panel or two!

This is at the top of page 50.
You see, the story, by Frank S Pepper, is called Captain Condor Fights the Space Pirates.
The space pirates, are buzzing around in space, hiding inside a fake asteroid - annoying, but eventually Captain Condor bamboozled them in some clever way, and when Pete, Captain Condor's special pal, pressed the red button, everything came obvious. Note the novel telescopic plunger mechanisms!
In the following panel, there is some conversation:
Pirate: We're cornered! The game's up!
Condor man: You've said it. You're all under arrest!
Captain Condor: Condor calling Earth: Mystery of Asteroid-X solved. Am returning with prisoners.
See what I mean about the colour? Isn't it great? I love that custard yellow!...
