Two very different Blake's 7 releases are out today from Big Finish - the latest in the series of novels, and a new collection of audio stories.
Bayban Ascending is the second of three collectable printed books – marking 10 years of adventures from Big Finish, based on Terry Nation's sci-fi TV show.
My mother… Oh yes, I had a mother. Wonderful woman. Truly evil person. She had a saying. "Babe," she used to say – she called me Babe. "Babe," she used to say. "Treat every hour as though it's your last."
Son is a diligent menial worker on the planet Calross. He has no idea who his father is. He lives with his mother by the Federation Factory where he works. He has two friends: a computer geek called Vann and a manual worker called Olag Gan. Son is having a secret relationship with Vel, Gan's woman. She tells him that she is able to channel her psychic gift through a broken piece of necklace that she stole from an ancient burial site on one of the outer worlds.
Holding the broken necklace, Son has a vision that he will achieve greatness. When it comes true, he decides to find its missing parts hiring a grizzled old pilot called Bayban the Butcher to help him...
This novel contains adult material and may not be suitable for younger readers.
Range Producer Peter Anghelides said: "Nigel's script for the audiobook works wonderfully well. I thought it was a shame that Blake's 7 fans couldn't read the original script for themselves, as it captures the brilliant and brutal Bayban and his pre-TV entourage in such vivid detail. It's wonderful to now present it in this handsome printed edition for Blake's 7 fans to savour Nigel's prose."
Author Nigel Fairs added: "The pleasure of writing a script for Colin Baker is that he loves language, as do I. So, when I was commissioned to write Bayban Ascending it was a joy to have Colin's voice in my head whilst I was writing and I urge everyone to keep his voice in mind when reading the novel!
"I really enjoyed giving the character of Bayban an interesting back-story that one might not necessarily have expected."
Meanwhile, the galactic war has unexpected repercussions in the new box set After the War.
These adventures are set in the immediate aftermath of the 1979 TV episode Star One – humanity is struggling, the Federation is reeling and many enemies are still at large after the Andromedan attack.
Jenna Stannis (Sally Knyvette), Cally (Jan Chappell) and Space Commander Travis (Brian Croucher) each have their own startling encounter with an alien threat from a distant world.
Andromeda One by Trevor Baxendale
Space Commander Travis knows that a data thief on the volcanic planet Amerinth can crack the encrypted coordinates for Star One. His road to hell is paved with bad intentions. Will an old acquaintance help him or thwart his treacherous purpose?
Fallout by Steve Lyons
When her life capsule crashes on a farming world, Jenna Stannis strikes up an uneasy alliance with the local population and a suspicious Federation officer. Will any of them recognise the alien menace that threatens to destroy their fragile coalition –and their lives?
The Enemy by Katharine Armitage
In the aftermath of their narrow escape from a devastated Liberator, Cally tracks down Jenna to a dilapidated space service station. Can Cally rescue her old friend and get them both to safety? Or has she unwittingly fallen into a deadly telepathic trap?
Brian Croucher said: "Andromeda One is another one of those exciting Blake's 7 stories! Travis lands on another planet with a young lady – they have a bit of a journey and a chase. He's going to Star One to perish!"
Sally Knyvette said: "It's extraordinary because I never thought that Blake's 7 would come back to me later on – it's been fab! It feels full circle. Jan and I are really enjoying working on these Big Finish episodes.
"I have no idea what's going to happen next but I'm quite excited. I hope Jenna will go on for the rest of my life – I love her now. She's feisty but is always on the side of good and freedom fighting. She's Robin Hood in space!"
Jan Chappell said: "The Enemy is a fascinating story – I wasn't quite sure where it was going myself. It was very interesting. Gradually Cally puts together that something is very wrong."
The Worlds of Blake's 7: After the War is available to own for just £19.99 (collector's edition CD box set + download) or £16.99 (download only) from the Big Finish website.
The Worlds of Blake's 7 – Bayban the Butcher: Bayban Ascending, is now available to own as a traditional hardback book with a full-colour jacket sleeve (for just £16.99) or as an eBook (for just £12.99).
