All of Ft. Myers was hit hard by Ian on Sept. 28, 2022. Bunche Beach was our favorite beach there, and we have now learned that it sustained minimal damage. The ecology in that area is very fragile, so this is good news.
I used to prowl around over there since it was beautiful and only 5 minutes from our home. (now destroyed.). These two young women loved the idea of a picture, but I waited for their pose to collapse in a fit of laughter.
One time I found a large sea turtle on the shore. Lee County park officials showed up and gently carried it away for care. Another time I photographed a couple, she in a bikini and he covered with tattoos, who were having an argument while standing at the waters' edge. I need to repost some of those Florida photos.
We also just learned that Lakes Park, the largest in Ft Myers, will reopen in January. It is a place where shore birds nest and where the Farmers Market will reopen complete with New York bagels. There are also gators swimming around.
Meanwhile, housing prices there are sky high, and insurers are struggling to repay their policy holders. Some have gone out of business. We made a big mistake by not obtaining flood insurance, because those Fla. companies will insure against hurricanes, but only for the wind portion. Only 20% of Floridians bought flood insurance. The cost of insurance will be going very high for those who want to return.
