JANUARY WRAP-UP!

Susy's Cozy World

Jan 29

Hello and happy Sunday everyone! I hope you had an amazing week, and that you are looking forward to another good one! Today I was a bit torn, I wanted to post the usual weekly recap but... but I decided to go with the recap for the entire month, and cheat a bit, because at the moment I am reading a book, well that's not surprising, but I think I will finish it for the end of the month because I am almost done, and so I would put it in there all the same (hence the cheating... but oh well, I don't think there is a wrap-up police ready to arrest me for this, right??):
January was a really good month, especially reading-wise since I read a lot of books, and I enjoyed most of them. And I did pretty good with my goals, too, so it really was an amazing start, and I really hope that the year would follow this example! I also had some days off work at the end of the month, which helped me both with my reading and with my knitting/crocheting time. It was a bliss, and a really needed one! So... let's see how the month went!

Books Read: 20 + 1 DNF
Physical books Vs ebooks: 4 vs 17
ARCs: 4

The Amazing Ones!

These three books were the best of the best I read in January! Ancillary Mercy is the conclusion to an amazing trilogy. I loved this series so much! The Mountains of Mourning was even better than what I was expecting, but it was also way more heartwrenching than what I was expecting. But this series is so good. So so good! And then we have an Italian non-fiction book about fake news and the infodemic. It was interesting, and I loved the way in which is written. It's not academic at all, it's fun as hell, and yet you take away a lot of info. The best!

The Really Really Good Ones!

The first book in this bunch is an Italian mystery, and it was a strange experience, because it is a solid book, and I really enjoyed it, but there are some parts that are funny, sunny almost (even if the MC is quite grumpy and adorable!), but some parts were really really dark. It was a strange balance. But the book was good and I devoured it! The Ink Black Heart is a really chunky book that does not feel like one, the story is captivating and I devoured it, too. Then we have one of the most wholesome book ever, World Running Down is sweet, is thought-provoking and I think it should be recommended everywhere! And then we have the book that is the one that "made" me cheat: Sharp Ends. And the main reason this book is here and not with the best of the best is because it's a short stories collection and even if I enjoy them, from time to time, I am not the biggest fun as a general rule, and we have some really amazing stories in there, and some that are, well... not bad, we are talking about Abercrombie and he is pretty good at what he does, but not as amazing so... here we are. And I have yet to read only a couple of them, so I think it's a safe bet to put it in there!

Unmentionable was a fascinating reading, and I really enjoyed the author's ways so I would try and read her other books too. And this one is well worth a reading! And then we have The Torch That Ignites The Stars. This is the least favorite in the series so far, but it is all the same a good book, and I was so happy to be back with these characters! They are all pretty amazing, and the books are really good. I am in love!

The Really Good Ones!

And here we have another bunch of pretty amazing books, so let's start with And Put Away Childish Things which is Narnia, but makes it adult and with some science. Intriguing as hell and quite a fast reading. (Well, it's also quite short so... there is that, too!). Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries is the most charming and delightful book out there at the moment! And Loveless is another pretty good book with a strong rep for ace and aro, and with a pretty good friendship and good characters around. It was sweet and funny! Then we have The Black Echo, the first book in the Harry Bosch series. And this is all Maddalena's fault. She is going through this series, and her reviews are always fascinating to read. And once upon a time, I loved this series, but I have read partially out of order, and I have not finished it so... why not go back to it and do things in the right way?? And here we are! And then we have The Shadows Between Us. And here I am a bit torn again. On a pure level of enjoyment, this book was good. I devoured it, and I was fascinated and intrigued by it. And the author has some original ideas that are really well-developed. But she is also lazy because there are a lot of things that are put there just for the sake of moving the story or making things difficult for the characters that are just... thrown in there without thinking about them. There would be ways to make them really set into the story, or make them more believable, or to make them work but... nope they are just put there because it makes vague sense and it serves some author's purposes. And that's just laziness.

The Okay Ones!

Awakening is a compelling book, hard to put down and with some really bad villains in there. And twists. A lot of them! Then we have a really cute book about dog, Amazing Dog Facts and Trivia. It is full of tid-bits of useful information, and the graphic is really amazing. I really enjoyed reading it! And then we have Jade Fire Gold. This was an okay book. Interesting world-building, well-paced, with some nice characters, but nothing to write home about.

The DNF One!

I was pretty excited to finally read my first Django Wexler book, but as soon as the excitement faded I was quite cold toward the book. It is not bad, the characters are interesting and the plot was starting to get interesting but... after reading more than 100 pages I wasn't invested in anything really. At best I was mildly interested, but since this is quite a chunky book, mild interest is not enough to carry on till the end so I let it go. It wasn't bad, just it wasn't the right one for me.

The SPSFC2 Ones!

My Reviews:
-Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
-World Running Down by Al Hess
-The Astral Hacker by Brian Terenna

Series:
Finished: 1 + 1 last volume published
Continued: 2

It seems like January was a good month for mystery and thriller, I have read some of them and I have started to re-watch Bones from the first episode. I loved that series, even if the last seasons weren't really so good anymore, sigh, but I have missed some episodes here and there and so I decided to do the same thing I am doing with the Harry Bosch book series, and go back from the start hopefully to the end!
And I have done pretty good with my reading goals: I have read 2 books from the Blame It On the Community list, I have read 3 non fiction books, 4 physical ones, 4 Italian ones and 4 non fantasy one (and here I do not count the sci-fi and the non-fiction ones) so... go me! I really hope to keep things up for the rest of the year!

And that's all for today! What about you? How was your November?? Let me know!

Happy reading!
S.
