'Needed doing'?
No, I mean yes, it was last year I think.
I was considering using pastels, which are generally wispy and floaty in their colours (preternatural is a good, but wrong, word) but combined with the harshness of a thin-pointed contrasty black ink pen. You know, a sort of juxtaposition - I do like that word too, I think I might say it again - Juxtaposition!
Look, dear reader, here it is.
It is quite a large one, I think a small version of it would be rather pissy! With a large one, like this, you could stand in front of it, and get drawn in.
Pastel and Pen. 2022. Pastel crayons and black ink on paper, about 28" x 19" (70 cm x 48 cm).
I think I did this one by sticking some roughly ripped pieces of paper around the edges of the blank sheet, then getting a finger in a rag covered in pastel dust and rubbing it, from the rough paper, inwards.
Then, taking the paper strips off, I gave it a spray of fixative and started going round the edges with my black pen - Mitsubishi drawing pens are very good for this sort of thing.
There were also five or six small spillages of colour on the white surround, but I went round them in ink too.
I think the idea is, that where the viewer's eye would go, to the centre of the thing, there isn't anything to see, well, very little, and all the interesting stuff is around the edges. It would make one want to take a step backwards to view it more successfully.
This one would go nicely in a posh person's home; nothing outlandish or upsetting here - pretty colours and neatness, it would go well with the pricy furniture and the room's carefully designed colour scheme.
Ha!..
