You are like light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15 and no one would light a lamp and put it under a clay pot. A lamp is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house. 16 Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
12 Once again Jesus spoke to the people. This time he said, "I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won't be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life."
13 The Pharisees objected, "You are the only one speaking for yourself, and what you say isn't true!"
14 Jesus replied:
Even if I do speak for myself, what I say is true! I know where I came from and where I am going. But you don't know where I am from or where I am going. 15 You judge in the same way that everyone else does, but I don't judge anyone. 16 If I did judge, I would judge fairly, because I would not be doing it alone. The Father who sent me is here with me. 17 Your Law requires two witnesses to prove that something is true. 18 I am one of my witnesses, and the Father who sent me is the other one.
19 "Where is your Father?" they asked.
"You don't know me or my Father!" Jesus answered. "If you knew me, you would know my Father."
20 Jesus said this while he was still teaching in the place where the temple treasures were stored. But no one arrested him, because his time had not yet come. John 8:12-20
If you are a true Christian, then you have the Light, you have Jesus. To be a true Christian, you must follow the Lord wherever He goes, in whatever He wants. You do good things because it is God who is the one doing good, for God is Good. You are controlled by His Spirit, and that Spirit helps you to obey the Lord in every way. We know this because we knew the Lord Jesus who knew God the Father.
Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.
Why praise God instead of you who is doing good? It doesn't make sense, right? As I've told you, it is God's Spirit who is the one doing good that is why we praise the God in heaven. It is also He that works in you, and do good things. That is why it is said in the scriptures that apart from Christ, we cannot bear good fruit:
4 Stay joined to me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot produce fruit unless you stay joined to me (the Lord Jesus said). John 15:4
Fruits are food that gives life. If you don't produce good fruits, then you don't have life like a rotten fruit that is thrown away.
That is why we must stay in the Lord and do our service for Him. We serve the Lord wholeheartedly, and that gives us joy when we bear good fruits:
23 And the seeds sown in the good soil stand for those who hear the message and understand it: they bear fruit, some as much as one hundred, others sixty, and others thirty." Matthew 13:23
