A Band from Goxhill/Barton-On-Humber (North Lincolnshire, England). In Andy Turner's zine Huddersfield Sucks #4 (released in autum of 1983) it was mentioned the people in the band were 'Rat' (bass), 'Grot' [James Griffiths] (vocals), Geoff 'Protest' [Bolam] (guitar) & Pete(r) [Davies] (drums). 'Grot' was the original bassist but he switched when Wendy left; he was replaced by 'Chops'. They recorded a rough tape entitled Bit Of Chaos Mate and by X-Mas '82 the tape Don't Feed The Pigeons came out. A bit later they also recorded for the Grievous Musical Harm compilation (intended for Sane recs but eventually on Xcentric Noise recs)...
No idea what the line-up on this tape here was. It was recorded in Steve Bird's Birdsong studios (Scunthorpe). They did 2 more tapes beside this one: Ooh My Belly ('91) & Not Heros ('92). Before that they had appeared on the On The Street compilation-LP (Sane recs; '84) & did some tracks for the tape-compilation Thrasher The Cat's Favourite Tunes (Retaliation recs; '85); later on ('93) they were on the You've Heard It All Before ('Crass' covers compilation; a benefit for Rape Crisis Centres in the UK).
On the www (terminalescape.blogspot) their music was described as "a gloriously random combination of mid-80s L.A. punk and driving Riot City gone cock-rock UK shits"... The review in Trust (#38; spring '93) goes: "Even if this thing here was of better sound-quality, I would hate it. Completely unpardonable splattercore from guys who have been making music since 1982 and haven't learned much, and will probably still be doing the same the same crap in 10 years.".
My review in Tilt! #7: >>Thrashy HCpunk bits with a mostly monotonous drumbeat that are still able to kindle people by times (how does that go?). Average...<<

The line-up in autumn '83 played a few gigs, mainly local ones with the exception of a punk all-dayer in Huddersfield. By late '84, early '85 the band broke up amicably and we went our separate ways. Fast forward to summer 1990 and the line-up of 'Grot' on vocals, Geoff on guitar, 'Rat' on bass and Pete on drums decided to reform and played a completely unrehearsed gig in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. That gig went very well so we decided to carry on. After a short space of time 'Rat' decided he couldn't commit fully and left to be replaced by Paul 'Face' Holmes, I'm not sure if this line-up recorded a demo or not. Moving forward, Geoff left the band due to other commitments with other bands in late 1990 I believe. I'm not 100% sure who replaced Geoff as we had a period of guitarists coming and going for a few months, but at some point we recorded a demo (with Steve Bird at his Birdsong studio in Scunthorpe), I believe we had 2 guitarists on that one, 'Boots' Neil Davis and Daz Brown. Things started picking up and we played a few gigs both locally in Scunthorpe and Hull, and further afield. After breaking a guitar-string mid-song and stopping to replace it during a gig 'Boots' was sacked. We carried on as a four-piece for the rest of 1991. So, it's my belief that the line-up on the Well...Erm... demo was 'Grot' on vocals, Daz on guitar, 'Face' on bass and Pete on drums. Around this time the band ventured into Europe playing gigs in The Netherlands and Switzerland; we had gigs booked in Germany but they fell through after arriving at the first venue to be told the promoter had done a runner. We also toured Ireland playing gigs in Cork and Limerick, a planned gig in Dublin fell through due to the venue being double-booked. After all the disappointments of cancelled gigs, not getting paid for gigs and the usual playing gigs to one man and his dog 'Face' decided to leave the band. After no luck in finding a suitable replacement bass-player 'Grot' decided to get his bass out again and we continued as a 3-piece who would record the Not Heroes demo (Sep. '92), again at Birdsong. During this recording-session we also recorded a cover of Securicor by 'Crass' for the Ruptured Ambitions compilation-album You've Heard It All Before. At this point we felt we had finally recorded a demo worthy of some recognition and continued playing gigs including support slots for 'PitchShifter', 'Leatherface' and 'Herb Garden' when they played in Scunthorpe. Alas, when all the hard work and commitment didn't get the recognition we felt it deserved the band finally called it a day sometime in late '93 I believe. I'm not 100% on dates etc. as this is going back 30 years but I don't think I'm a million miles away.
James Griffiths
It occurs to me that the line-up was Pete Davis (drums), Geoff 'Protest' Bolam and James Griffiths.
Mark Richardson ('Terminus')
Paul ('Face') of the 'Obscene Females' is my father; sadly he died on January 2nd, 2011...
Bronwyn Holmes
I saw this band once! The guitarist Neil Davis was a friend of mine. My memory/impression was that Neil had been drafted into the band as a replacement, rather than somebody who formed the group originally.
