What's Your Why?

I was asked to talk about my why the other week, and I realized that it's something I hadn't seriously thought about in a while. It's something that's been in the back of my mind, sure, but not something I had articulated since my husband and I started our podcast.

Knowing your why is important for any endeavor. It helps you narrow down your topic and focus, and find your ideal audience. And it helps inform all your decisions around your project.

Some questions to ask yourself and figure out your why:

  • What are you passionate about?
  • When do you feel most energized? (Think about last week. What activities did you do where you lost track of time?)
  • Why do you want to start your podcast (or "insert project or business here")?

If it helps, here's a little about my why.

When I think of dinosaurs, the word "extraordinary" comes to mind, like how we've found "mummified" dinosaurs, complete with skin and gut contents. It took decades to figure out how that was even possible.

Our show is a family friendly educational podcast for adults about dinosaurs that promotes science and critical thinking. We interview experts and cover discoveries, news, and deep dives of specific dinosaurs.

Reporting on dinosaurs for our podcast I Know Dino (460+ episodes and counting!) has brought me closer to Garret, my partner in podcasting and in life, and helped me rediscover my childlike wonder for both dinosaurs and science.

I'm reminded of my why every week when we record, each time my daughter plays with her—scientifically accurate—dinosaur toys, and whenever we hear from our wonderful community, about how our podcast enriches their lives, or helps them better connect with the dino-obsessed kids in their lives, or inspired them to go on a dig or even find a new dinosaur-related job.
